Not just Kesineni, many MPs not keen contesting polls

Senior Telugu Desam Party leader and Vijayawada MP Kesineni Nani is learn to have decided not to contest the next Lok Sabha elections scheduled to be held in 2024.

Though it is too early to talk about the next Lok Sabha elections, Kesineni reportedly conveyed to party president and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu during his meeting with the latter a month ago.

Kesineni also told Naidu that even his daughter Swetha is not interested in contesting the Lok Sabha elections. In fact, she might not continue in politics and had gone back to Tata Trust to take up the job, he said.

Though the Vijayawada MP expressed his reluctance to contest the Lok Sabha elections, he did not specifically say whether he is interested in contesting the assembly elections.

He, however, told Naidu that he had no intention of shifting loyalties and would continue in the TDP.

He suggested to the TDP chief that it would be better if the party starts looking for another suitable candidate for Vijayawada Lok Sabha seat.

“I have fulfilled all the promises I have made for the people of the constituency during the last elections,” he said.

The reason for Kesineni not showing interest in contesting the Lok Sabha elections is not beyond one’s comprehension. In fact, most of the MPs, cutting across the parties including ruling YSR Congress party, are of the same feeling.

In the past, the Lok Sabha MPs used to have a lot of influence at the Centre and make big money through contracts, lobbying with the central government in favour of industrialists and big business houses and their contacts with other party leaders.

But during the last seven years of Narendra Modi government, the MPs have absolutely no such chance. They have no such powers nor can they wield influence with the officials at the Centre. All the chances of making big money have vanished.

So, there is no point in spending crores of rupees in the elections to become an MP, as they can’t even recover the money they spent in the elections. Instead, an MLA is making more money than an MP.

No wonder, if the political parties find it difficult to get suitable candidates to contest the Lok Sabha elections next time!
