Naidu under pressure ahead of free bus travel

The Telugu Desam Party-led coalition government in Andhra Pradesh, headed by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, is preparing to launch the free bus travel scheme for women starting August 15. However, the initiative has come under pressure from multiple quarters.

As final arrangements for buses and regulatory guidelines are being completed, with the Cabinet expected to approve the scheme officially in its August 6 meeting, tensions are mounting as both auto workers and APSRTC employees voice key demands.

Auto drivers have called for the withdrawal of GO No. 21, clarifying that they are not opposed to the free bus scheme itself. They are seeking financial assistance of ₹15,000 per driver, citing concerns that their livelihoods will be adversely affected. Additionally, they are urging the government to regulate online auto-rickshaw services.

During the election campaign, the government had promised ₹10,000 in financial support to auto drivers. Discussions are currently underway to provide this assistance alongside the rollout of the bus scheme. However, the latest demand for ₹15,000 has increased pressure on the government to act swiftly.

Simultaneously, APSRTC employees are planning statewide protests on August 12 and 13. Their demands include the settlement of pending dues and retirement benefits, as well as protection of RTC assets.

Union leaders have opposed the government’s move to lease high-value RTC properties in Vijayawada to private entities. They are demanding the immediate resolution of long-standing employee grievances.

Given the importance of the free bus travel initiative, the upcoming Cabinet meeting on August 6 is expected to take crucial decisions addressing these concerns. Meanwhile, APSRTC management is in the final stages of preparing for the scheme’s smooth implementation.
