Is Jagan Wasting Energy On Political Witch-Hunt?

There is a popular Telugu poem of famous poet Srinatha: “Kantiki nidra vachune…. Kantakudaina saatravudu okandu tananthati vaadu kalginan” (Can anybody get proper sleep, if there is an enemy who is equally powerful and has become a thorn in his flesh?)

It is true for any political leader. If there is a strong rival for him, he will not rest till the rival is completely decimated. Perhaps, YSR Congress party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy appears to be thinking in the same lines.

Right from the day one of assuming power, Jagan’s only political agenda has been to wipe out the TDP from the political arena of Andhra Pradesh, send its president and his bitter rival N Chandrababu Naidu to jail at any cost and crush the leaders and industrialists of the Kamma caste that has been the financial backbone of the TDP.

Starting with the demolition of Praja Vedika on the banks of Krishna river two years ago, Jagan has been running after the heads of all prominent TDP leaders by targeting their financial roots, winding up their business activities and fixing them in various cases.

Many TDP leaders including state unit president K Atchannaidu, Kollu Ravindra, Dhulipalla Narendra, Chintamaneni Prabhakar, J C Prabhakar Reddy, JC Asmith Reddy and B C Janardhan Reddy were thrown behind bars in various cases. Even Naidu was booked by the CID for his alleged role in the acquisition of assigned lands in Amaravati.

His confrontation with state election commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar for postponing the local body elections and even judiciary by lodging a complaint with the Chief Justice of India against senior judge N V Ramana alleging that the latter had conspired to pull down his government with the help of Naidu and other judges shows his aggressive attitude to see that there should not be any opposition against him.

But critics wonder whether Jagan is only wasting his energies on this witch-hunting of rivals.

“He has got the massive mandate in the assembly elections by winning 151 out of 175 MLAs. The TDP has almost buried down in the earth and there has to be a miracle, if it has to resurrect itself to come to power in the next elections. Where is the need for Jagan to hound the TDP leaders and give them unnecessary life?” an observer commented.

Like Srinatha said in the poem, Jagan might be still considering Naidu as a potential threat, a powerful enemy and a thorn in the flesh. And so, he wants to finish off Naidu and his party once and for all so that he can have smooth sailing.

“But it is unnecessary. The TDP is like a dead snake and there is no point in attacking it again and again. If Jagan focusses on implementing his welfare schemes with more vigour, nobody can beat him, at least for another decade. By then, the TDP will automatically die a natural death. So, why waste energies on witch-hunting Naidu and his men,” the observer asked.

Maybe, Jagan is of the view that his ego will be satisfied if Naidu and his son Lokesh go to jail.

“But there is a way to do it. It should not appear like a witch-hunt. If he thinks Naidu is managing the systems, Jagan should also adopt the same strategy and achieve his goal,” he added.
