Editorial: Politics Of Criminals Or Criminal Politics

The definition of politics holds an entirely different understanding in India. For some, it is a job of five years which can fetch crores of money, for some it is the only source to unlimited power and corruption, few others consider it as their birth right and ensure it passes on to their family. While the perceptions and motives may be different, the underlying theme is only one, almost all of them have a shade of a criminal in them.

In today’s time, there are nearly 162 honorable MPs in the parliament who have criminal charges against them and a common man is punished severely for not paying tax properly or doing a robbery, but what happens when the MPs or Ministers resort to such acts? The law comes in between. Recently something like that happened and the congress party famous for its deep rooted corruption came up with their argument.

It is heard that they made it clear to the Supreme Court that charging even one MP or Minister with prosecution would mean the government would collapse quoting the ‘razor thin margin’. The affidavit from the defense says “May have a deleterious effect on the functioning of the government.” While that is acknowledged, what happens to the offense that the minister or MP has committed then?

The congress party is doing whatever it takes to shield the MPs from getting charged and disqualified as they are hanging on the edge of a cliff. But this is nothing new. As long as there is a coalition government and someone like Congress who is neck deep in corruption and expert in scams, the situation is not going to change. One begins to wonder whether politics is being handled by criminals or politicians are handling things criminally. Just a thought folks!
