A 24-year-old Indian woman, Simran Simran, has gone missing in the United States just days after arriving in New Jersey, reportedly for an arranged marriage, authorities said.
Simran was last seen on June 20, shortly after landing in the U.S. Surveillance footage reviewed by Lindenwold police showed her checking her phone and appearing to wait for someone. Officers noted that she did not seem to be in distress at the time.
She was officially reported missing on Wednesday, five days after her arrival. Investigators revealed that she had traveled to the U.S. for what was believed to be an arranged marriage.
However, authorities are also looking into whether the marriage arrangement may have been a cover to obtain free airfare to America, according to The New York Post.
Police say Simran has no known relatives in the U.S. and does not speak English. She owns only an international phone that works via Wi-Fi, making communication limited.
Authorities have also been unable to reach any family members in India for further information.
“As of now, there are no known family members in India we can contact to gather more details about her possible location,” Lindenwold police said in a statement cited by Patch News.
Simran is described as 5'4" tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds (68 kg), with a small scar on the left side of her forehead. She was last seen wearing gray sweatpants, a white T-shirt, black flip-flops, and diamond-studded earrings.
Anyone with information on her whereabouts is urged to contact Lindenwold Police Detective Joe Tomasetti.
