Floods' Threat To The New Capital

Ever since the Andhra Pradesh government has announced that it will build a new capital bordering the Krishna river, it is being presented with various problems.

While procurement of the land remains the main problem for now, Chandra Babu’s proposal of developing the capital on either sides of the Krishna river has some serious implications warn experts.

If the plan materializes, then it would include Amaravathi, Tadepalli, Tulluru in Guntur and Kanchikacherla, Ibrahimpatnam in Krishna district.

But an assessment of the land must be made before any developmental activity is taken up, warn land experts.

It is being widely felt that a thorough analysis by scientists must be done before going ahead with the development process.

Also, according to latest reports, all the above-mentioned areas are under high-risk zone if floods occur.

So some experts feel that AP government must take its lessons from the recent case of flash floods in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir and ensure that such calamity is avoided.

Incidentally, Urban Development Minister P Narayana has recently announced that the Andhra Pradesh government has requested the district collectors to identify areas on a higher level. It is also being said that a strong dam would be constructed by the water department on the Krishna river.

Despite the many challenges, the Andhra Pradesh government is for now committed to the idea of developing the new capital on either sides of Krishna river.
