Cong Resurgence, A Wakeup Call For KCR!

Cong Resurgence, A Wakeup Call For KCR!

The resurgence of the Congress party in the assembly elections in Gujarat is considered to be a wakeup call for the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi in Telangana, headed by chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

The Congress might have lost the Gujarat polls, but it has given a very tough fight to the Bharatiya Janata Party led from the front by none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the figures available form Gujarat, the Congress has improved its strength by 18 – it got 61 seats in 2012 and now, the number has gone up to nearly 80. This is despite the fact that more than a dozen MLAs of the Congress party defected to the BJP a few months ago to defeat senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel in the Rajya Sabha elections.

The resignation for former chief minister Shankar Singh Vaghela from the party to float his own outfit also affected the Congress chances. His party is learnt to have hit the prospects of the Congress in as many as 100 seats. Yet, the voting for Congress has also gone up from 37 per cent to over 44 per cent.

The improved performance of the Congress is definitely a morale booster for the party and it will have a reflection in Telangana, too.

In fact, a vast majority of the people in rural Gujarat voted for the Congress, while the BJP managed to win the elections only because of the support base in urban areas.

The Congress could gain on the growing discontent among the youth in the rural areas due to unemployment, rising prices and caste conflicts.

In Telangana, too, KCR is facing a similar problem. He might have appeased the urban youth and some caste groups, but there is an undercurrent of disgruntlement among the rural youth and people.

Unless he takes care of these issues, the Congress will definitely bounce back in Telangana and KCR is no Modi to weave his charm on the urban middle class!
