Megastar Rajinikanth, the legendary “Thalaiva” of Indian cinema, once came close to proposing to the late actress Sridevi, but an unexpected twist stopped him.
During their early years of collaboration, Rajinikanth reportedly developed strong feelings for Sridevi. Their chemistry lit up the screen in films across Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, but few knew that Rajinikanth intended to ask for her hand in marriage.
As revealed by filmmaker K. Balachander, Rajinikanth had gone to Sridevi’s housewarming party determined to confess his love.
However, just as he arrived, a sudden power outage plunged the house into darkness. Interpreting it as a bad omen, Rajinikanth left quietly, never expressing his feelings.
Despite this missed opportunity, the two remained cordial and worked together in several successful films such as Moondru Mudichu, Johnny, Bhagwaan Dada, and Chaalbaaz.
Rajinikanth is now preparing for his next big release, Coolie, which is set to clash with War 2 at the box office on August 14, 2025.
Sridevi, who passed away in 2018, remains an icon in Indian cinema. Her last lead role was in MOM (2017), followed by a brief appearance in Zero.
