Legal Sex Workers Face Covid Blow

Legal Sex Workers Face Covid Blow

At the outset, the effect of the horrifying Corona virus or Covid 19 has not just been breathing the life out of human beings but also from the backbone of every country’s economy.

Each day, more than two hundred plus nations are witnessing crores of losses owing to the virus and the reason for that is the lockdown.

At a surface level, the general discussion is about the conventional industries such as Information Technology, Manufacturing, Retail, Travel, Hospitality and Entertainment.

However, there are also those industries which are not generally discussed but certainly bearing the brunt in a big way. One such industry is prostitution.

The United States of America is one country which has prostitution as a legal business in most of its states. Top in that list is Nevada which is also the base of the Sin City, Las Vegas.

With a complete shutdown of places like bars and strip joints reports from Nevada reveal the legal sex workers are now staring at a very scary future. It is not just the case of Nevada but worldwide it is the same.

Whether it is legal or illegal, the sex industry is a very big vertical across the world and it is nothing short of a billion dollar industry. Due to the whole virus menace, all the legal sex workers are getting scared.

Incidentally, they all come under unemployed list because most of them are into contract with their respective brothels. With brothels closing down there is no scope for business.

On the other hand, there are also those sex workers who work independently personally and even they don’t come under the state relief scheme.

Given the fact that it is a legal thing out there, the sex workers at least have the right to approach the authorities and seek a way out. However, the same cannot be said of a country like ours.

Though it is not legal, prostitution is a thriving industry in India as well. This might come across as a bit of a surprise but then as per one estimate our nation has approximately 10 million commercial sex workers. Cities like Mumbai and Kolkata have the largest brothels.

And with Corona spreading its tentacles to every nook and corner of this big nation, everything is in a complete shutdown mode and this has put the lives of these women in jeopardy. Among them, there are those women whose daily bread and butter depends on their daily earning.

In a way, they are also like the daily wage laborers. We still have two more weeks to go and it is only upto destiny and fate to decide who survives through this.
