Hyd Psychologist Marries Patient, Dies By Suicide

A 33-year-old psychologist, Dr A Rajitha, died by suicide in Hyderabad on Tuesday. According to police, she had been facing harassment from her husband and his family.

Rajitha met her husband, Rohit, while he was undergoing treatment at a mental health hospital in Banjara Hills, where she was working as an intern.

Reports say Rohit's condition improved significantly under her care. He later proposed to her, and they got married.

After the wedding, Rajitha’s family claims Rohit stopped working and began using her income for his personal needs.

Rajitha worked as a child psychologist at a reputed international school and often asked Rohit to change his behaviour. However, he allegedly became violent and would assault her whenever she refused to give him money.

Her family has alleged that the harassment worsened over time, involving not just Rohit, but also his parents, Kishtaiah and Surekha, and his brother Mohit.

Rajitha first attempted suicide on July 16 by consuming sleeping pills. She was hospitalised and later taken home by her parents.

On July 28, she attempted suicide again by jumping from the bathroom window of her fourth-floor apartment. She suffered serious head injuries and was declared brain dead at the hospital.

Based on a complaint filed by her father, Sub-Inspector Narsimha Goud, the Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar police registered a case against Rohit and his family under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (abetment of suicide).

A police official confirmed, “We have registered a case under IPC Section 306 against the husband and his family. The investigation is ongoing, and we are collecting evidence related to the harassment."
