Why so many beds, so many kits?

Why so many beds, so many kits?

Both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments have been claiming that the number of Coronavirus cases has been on the decline and that they would be able to come out of the crisis very soon.

While 15 cases was registered in AP since Wednesday night out of 450 samples tested, Telangana recorded just 18 cases out of 667 samples tested.

Telangana health minister Etala Rajender went to the extent of claiming that there might not be any fresh cases in the state and that all those who were in hospitals would be discharged by April 22.

Well, if that is the case with both the states, one wonders why the Jagan Mohan Reddy government in AP and KCR government in Telangana have been spending huge money on establishing new makeshift hospitals, setting up of quarantine centres and placing orders for purchase of lakhs of testing kits, thousands of ventilators and large number of PPE kits.

For example, the Telangana government has prepared a 1500-bed hospital at Gachibowli sports complex, besides readying another 5,000 beds at various hospitals to keep the Covid-19 patients.

On the other hand, Andhra Pradesh government, too, has taken over private hospitals with a bed capacity of over 19,000. It is also recruiting nearly 2,000 temporary doctors and other medical professionals in the name of Covid Warriors.

The AP government has also taken up a comprehensive family survey in the third round as per ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) guidelines to find out any persons with Covid-19 symptoms. Jagan instructed the officials to include 6,289 symptomatic members in the third survey.

So far, as many as 12,311 suspected cases had been identified in the third round of survey and of them, 1754 people were kept in home quarantine and another 26 persons sent to the hospitals. On Wednesday, another 604 suspects were referred to hospitals for testing.

All these indicate that the situation is far from improving. And the state governments are aware of it and therefore, are getting ready to face the eventuality.
