Spotlight: Why Are Babu, KCR Silent On Budget

The union budget presented by finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman in Parliament on Monday has disappointed almost all sections of the people, except perhaps a few corporates and other such sections.

For the two Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the budget has offered nothing.

While the budget showered sops worth thousands of crores on the states that are going to polls shortly, it has not considered even basic requirements of Telugu states.

Yet, there has not been much response from our politicians. In Andhra Pradesh, the ruling YSR Congress party at least expressed displeasure openly.

YSRC general secretary V Vijay Sai Reddy said the budget was thoroughly disappointing for Andhra Pradesh, as no project was given any funds.

There was a late-night press release from the office of chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, which said the officials expressed unhappiness over the budget.

The chief minister did not make any comments against the Centre, and asked the offiicals to pursue with the Centre to get more funds.

What is surprising is the lack of any comment from TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu. There was neither a Twitter comment nor a public statement from him on the budget.

His party leader and former finance minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu said the budget had nothing for AP, but blamed it on the Jagan Mohan Reddy government for mortgaging the state’s interests with the Centre in his attempt to get out of the CBI cases.

In Telangana, too, there was absolutely no comment from the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

While there was no statement from chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao as he was away in his farm house, none of his ministers including his son K T Rama Rao or finance minister T Harish Rao uttered even a word.

The TRS MPs also avoided media persons in New Delhi saying: No comment.

The Telangana Congress party is the only opposition party which made strong comments against the Nirmala Sitaraman budget, following the stand taken by its central leadership.
