Nimmagadda To Be Summoned To Assembly?

If Andhra Pradesh state assembly’s privileges committee has its way, state election commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar will have to appear before the committee soon to give an explanation for his comments against the two ministers in Jagan Mohan Reddy cabinet.

The privileges committee headed by Kakani Goverdhan Reddy had an emergency meeting in a virtual mode on Tuesday following a direction from assembly speaker Tammineni Sitaram, who on Monday evening forwarded the petitions of the two ministers – Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy and Botsa Satyanarayana.

The privileges committee discussed the modalities of summoning Nimmagadda for a personal appearance before the assembly to give an explanation for his comments against the ministers.

Goverdhan Reddy brought to the notice of the committee members that under Rules 212 and 213 of the legislative procedures, the assembly has powers to summon state election commissioner for causing breach of privilege of any members.

He brought to the notice of the members that there was a precedent in Maharashtra state legislature in 2008, when the SEC was summoned before the assembly under similar conditions.

The committee, however, could not take a final decision on serving notices on the SEC. It is expected to meet again a week later to discuss the issue thoroughly before issuing summons to Ramesh Kumar.
