As the Telugu Desam Party-led coalition government headed by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu approaches its one-year anniversary in office — just 12 days away — speculation is once again mounting over a possible reshuffle of the state cabinet.
According to reports in sections of the media, discussions have begun regarding a potential cabinet expansion in the second or third week of June.
While the induction of newly elected MLC and Jana Sena Party leader Nagababu into the cabinet has been pending for some time, there are also talks of a minor reshuffle within the existing ministers.
Currently, there is scope for only one additional berth in Naidu’s cabinet. If Nagababu is inducted, it would leave no room for further appointments.
However, recent buzz suggests that the BJP is seeking a second cabinet berth in addition to the one already held by Y Satya Kumar Yadav.
If the BJP’s demand is accommodated, it may necessitate a reshuffle, possibly involving the removal of a couple of sitting ministers.
Sources indicate that during the one-year governance review, Naidu expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of certain ministers.
He is expected to present “progress cards” for all ministers during the cabinet meeting scheduled for June 4.
Reports suggest the performance of three ministers is under scrutiny — one from Uttarandhra, another from the Godavari region who is embroiled in controversies, and a third from Rayalaseema.
However, some leaders caution that dropping ministers just one year into the government's term could send the wrong message.
“If any ministers are to be replaced, care must be taken to maintain social and regional balance,” sources noted.
