Behind The Scene: Ill-Timed Release

Twice in two years, since becoming the President, Pranab Mukherjee has released two volumes of his memoirs titled 'The Turbulent Years-1980-1996'.

The work deal with an exhaustive range of experiences and challenges that Pranab Mukherjee faced in those years apart from his opinion on certain statesmen and significant events of the period.

Needless to say, some of those events whether it be the Indira Gandhi assassination, Babri Masjid demolition, his Prime Ministerial aspirations etc are all controversial and definitely will not appeal to one political party or the other.

Considering the sensitive nature of this content, it would probably have been better if the President had released these memoirs after demitting office.

This point is best illustrated by an example. If Virat Kohli were to write an autobiography now about his experiences in the Indian cricket team while he is still in the team, can the dressing room be the same and unprejudiced after that?
