Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Ponnala Lakshmaiah on Thursday alleged that at least 120 farmers committed suicide during the two-month rule of Telangana Rashtra Samithi.
Ponnala said that the TRS Government has failed to fulfill any of the promises that it made with the people. He claimed that the previous Congress regime took no time in providing free power and other facilities to the farmers after it returned to power in 2004 elections. However, even after two months, the TRS Government is yet to take practical steps to honour its commitments.
Strongly condemning the lathicharge on farmers in Medak district, Ponnala said that the Congress party would organise massive protests if the TRS Government continues to suppress the agitation.
The Congress wanted to give some time to the government to initiate steps for farmers' welfare. However, its silence should be treated as its weakness and as a main opposition, the Congress would protest against all failure and anti-people policies of the TRS Government, he said.
