Sharp rise in Covid cases in AP: What's up?

The number of Covid-19 cases in Andhra Pradesh has been going up steeply, but the government appears to be taking it easy as no steps have been announced so far to restrict the infections.

While Andhra Pradesh is doing well in taking up the vaccination drive, there appears to be laxity in containing the spread of the Covid-19 infections.

For the last two days, the state has been reporting more than 4,000 cases per day, which is the highest daily tally since October 2020.

On Wednesday, as many as 4,157 people tested positive for the virus while 18 deaths were reported from different parts of the state.

The total number of active cases in the state stood at 28,383 on Wednesday as against 8,142 on April 1, which is more than 300 per cent jump in the number of positive cases.

Even with regard to testing, Andhra Pradesh, which was doing more than a lakh tests per day till November, suddenly reported a sharp drop in testing. Only 31,000 tests were done on April 1, which went up to around 35,000 tests on Wednesday.

With this smaller number of testing itself, the positive cases have crossed 4,000 mark; and it would be much more, if the testing crosses one lakh again.

What is more, the state government has been stubbornly running all the educational institutions, despite the rapid spread of infections, though the neighbouring Telangana shut down all schools and colleges.

When the centre on Wednesday announced cancellation of 10th exams and postponement of Class 12 exams, AP minister for education Adimulapu Suresh said the government would go ahead with its examinations as per the original schedule.

“We shall take a call, when the situation worsens,” he said.

It is better the Jagan government wakes up to the reality before it is too late.
