June 4: Backstabbing Day vs Freedom Day

June 4 marks one year since the defeat of the YSR Congress Party, led by former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Although the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led coalition officially assumed office on June 12, June 4 is widely seen as the symbolic return of Chandrababu Naidu to power.

The YSR Congress Party has called on the people of the state to observe June 4 as "Backstabbing Day," in protest against the Naidu government’s alleged failure to fulfill its pre-election promises and its betrayal of public trust.

YSRCP state coordinator Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy announced that the party would organize statewide protests on June 4 under the theme “Backstabbing Day,” highlighting the government's failures and its deception of Andhra Pradesh citizens.

“The YSRCP will hold protests across the state to expose Naidu’s failures. Party workers and citizens will conduct rallies in all constituencies and submit memoranda to local officials, demanding the immediate implementation of promised welfare schemes,” Sajjala said.

In response to the YSRCP’s campaign, the TDP-led coalition is planning to celebrate June 4 as “Freedom from Jagan’s Rule Day.”

Jana Sena Party president and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan urged party workers and the public to treat the day as a grand celebration.

He encouraged people to decorate their homes with rangoli, organize rangoli competitions for women, light lamps, and burst crackers in the evening, marking what he called the end of YSRCP’s misrule.

“Share these celebrations widely on social media to amplify the digital campaign,” Pawan Kalyan said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

TDP MP Kalisetti Appalanayudu said the state endured severe hardships under Jagan Mohan Reddy’s leadership, which led to a historic electoral verdict on June 4 last year.

“To commemorate this, we will observe June 4 as ‘Freedom from Jagan’s Rule Day,’” he said, adding that the YSRCP’s call for “Backstabbing Day” is ironic and bizarre, considering the party’s alleged misgovernance and misuse of power.
