Jagan Should Play Cards Close To His Chest

YSR Congress party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy might have thought that he was sending jitters in the Telugu Desam Party camp by declaring that he was ready to join hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party in the next general elections, but analysts say his strategy might prove counterproductive, if the alliance does not work out.

Already, Andhra Pradesh BJP leaders have spurned Jagan’s idea of forging an alliance with the saffron party.

BJP MLC Somu Veerraju said the national party does not have any plans to break the existing alliances or make new alliances.

“Our alliance with the TDP will continue. If the YSRC wants to support the NDA, it is most welcome,” he said.

Senior BJP leader and former union minister Daggubati Purandeshwari also said it was not correct on the part of Jagan to demand the special category status for Andhra Pradesh as a pre-condition to joining the NDA.

“It is a closed chapter,” she said, indicating that the alliance may not be possible with conditions.

Jagan’s well-wishers are also not happy with Jagan disclosing his plans. They are of the view that he should play his cards close to his chest, rather than opening up which would only help his rivals.

Former MP Vundavalli Arun Kumar said the chances of YSRCP joining hands with the BJP in the next elections were almost nil.

“Jagan, who has been extending unconditional support to BJP since 2014, has now put a condition that he would walk with the saffron party if they give special status to Andhra Pradesh now.

The Centre will not give the special status to AP at any cost and hence, the doors for Jagan to have any alliance with BJP are closed,” he said.

Vundavalli felt that it was for YSRCP to decide whether he would go it alone or get closer to the Congress.

“At the Centre, the fight is going to be between NDA and UPA and either of them will come to power. Since the talk of early elections is in the air, it is time for Jagan to decide whom he will support at the national level,” he said.
