Aamir Khan has revealed that his latest film, Sitaare Zameen Par, was made on a budget of around ₹122 crore; up from the initial ₹96 crore after he bought out a partner who disagreed with his decision to reject lucrative OTT offers.
Speaking on Matthew Belloni’s podcast The Town, Aamir admitted he is yet to recover the investment.
“I hope that I make the money back, and right now both YouTube and I are separately promoting it on the platform,” he said.
The film’s pay-per-view release on YouTube has reportedly exceeded expectations, with separate budgets allocated for its theatrical and digital runs.
Industry analyst Komal Nahta claimed that Prime Video had offered ₹120 crore for the film, but Aamir turned it down.
Directed by R. S. Prasanna, the movie has earned approximately ₹276 crore at the worldwide box office so far.
Calling the pay-per-view model “a great opportunity for indie filmmakers who don’t get theatrical distribution,” Aamir suggested it could open new avenues for smaller productions.
