H-1B Lottery 2023 Half Million applicants

H-1B Lottery 2023 Half Million applicants

The H-1B lottery registration for 2023 has already started. Last year 483,927 applicants applied for the H-1B lottery. There are expected to be more than half a million applicants this year. There are many reasons for this phenomenal increase in H-1B lottery applicants.

Biden administration has loosened H-1B documentation requirements like end client letters. As a result, the H-B approval rate has significantly increased, which gave hope for many employers to sponsor more H-1B workers.

The H-1b online lottery registration was introduced in 2020. Before this online registration process, employers sent entire packets of H-1B petitions, and then USCIS would return petitions of the employees who are not selected. This was an expensive postal nightmare.

The H-1B lottery registration removed this issue but added another issue. With an easy online registration process the number of applicants applying for the H-1B lottery increased.

Even though the product companies in California did few layoffs, the US job market and economy is still strong and there is a shortage of IT professionals. Hence American employers are sponsoring H-1B petitions for foreign workers in record numbers.

Finally, Indian implementation partners are using the H-1B lottery registration as a bargaining chip to retain employees with low wages.

For example, they sponsor ten employees, and only two employees are selected in the lottery. The remaining eight employees will be sponsored again next year, along with ten more new employees. This became a vicious cycle of more and more applicants being sponsored by Indian implementation partners, increasing the number of H-1B applicants for the H-1B lottery.
