Editorial: Right To Speech With Riot?

India is a democratic country and there are many who make full use of it, of course in a rather wrong way. Democracy advocates freedom of speech but more than speech it is the freedom of actions and reactions which is dominating this nation’s day to day life. Of course, there is also the right to speech but it is only for those who hold power and it is no longer a privilege for the common man who votes those individuals to power.

The recent incident of arresting two girls for making comments on Facebook and ‘Liking’ it along with the attack on one of the victim’s uncles establishments is a clear example of how those in power use their muscle to suppress anything. This is simply a case of barbarism and use of brutal force with no law to hold them. Here, it is not about the comments made by the girls or the reaction from the political party, it is the question of what the government and the system is doing to control these things.

The incident in Mumbai is just a tip of the iceberg to what’s been happening in the Telangana region and especially Hyderabad. Several cases of attacks have happened and as always the government and the law have failed to enforce their powers and bring justice. And when justice is denied or suppressed then it is but natural that the government will fail to stand for the next term.

Democracy doesn’t mean no fear of law, democracy means the right to freedom of expression and one can protest or differ against something but very much within the limits of civility and righteousness. Arresting the victims because of the attackers is something ridiculous. Okay, the attackers have been arrested but what action is being taken on them. What is the approach of the law in handling such things? Does it mean that a right to speech is met with riot and violence? How does it justify the actions of those who are involving in such activities and how can they be the responsible representatives of the society?
