Encounter downs Naidu image!

The killing of 20 suspected red sandalwood smugglers by the Andhra Pradesh police has landed Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in an embarrassing situation, with the Centre seeking a report into the incident and international organisations accusing him of resorting to cold-blooded murders of innocent woodcutters.

After the encounter, there has been a negative campaign in the online media against Naidu across the world.

Even international media gave it a massive coverage, pointing an accusing finger at the Naidu government.

There have been enquiries from various international agencies about the massacre of 20 unarmed woodcutters by the AP police and the Chief Minister convened a meeting of the top police on Thursday seeking suggestions to undo the damage caused to his reputation.

Amnesty International, an international human rights organization demanded an independent and thorough inquiry into the encounter.

If the killings are found to be unlawful, those responsible should be brought to justice, it said. “There must be a criminal investigation to determine whether the police used excessive force, and whether the killings amount to ‘fake encounters’, or staged extrajudicial executions”, said Abhirr VP, Campaigner at Amnesty International India. “The police are not above the law, and must not be treated like they are.”
