What Is Sharmila Doing These Days?

It has been nearly three weeks since one has heard about Y S Sharmila, daughter of former chief minister of combined Andhra Pradesh Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy and sister of present AP chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

After hitting the headlines with her Khammam rally followed by her “deeksha” at Indira Park in Hyderabad demanding filling up of jobs in Telangana and getting arrested by the police at Tank Bund, Sharmila has suddenly become silent.

Nothing much is heard about her plans to float a new regional party in Telangana, as she has not been holding any meetings apparently due to Covid-19. Except an occasional tweet, Sharmila has also not been in media focus.

Apparently, she has confined herself to her residence and stopped meeting people because of the increasing number of Covid-19 cases.

Since she has fixed the date of her party launch on July 8, which is still two months away, she doesn’t want to take any risks for now, sources close to her party said.

However, the background work for the registration of her political party with the Election Commission of India, preparation of her party philosophy and designing of her party colour and flag is going on, sources said.

But analysts say Sharmila needs to be actively seen and heard among the people to sustain her political activity; otherwise, there is every chance that people might not take her seriously.

“She has to continuously react on the people’s issues, including the Covid-19 crisis and expose the lack of a proper action plan from the Telangana government. It is very much essential to be among the news regularly,” an analyst said.
