Telangana Pegs Loss Due To Rains At Rs 9,400 cr

The recent heavy rains and floods in Telangana has caused a huge loss to agriculture, infrastructure and properties, estimated to be around Rs 9,400 crore, the Telangana government said on Thursday.

This was brought to the notice of a five-member Central team by chief secretary Somesh Kumar through a power-point presentation.

The team led by Union joint secretary Praveen Vasishta came to Hyderabad on a two-visit to Telangana to assess extent of damage caused due to floods.

Somesh Kumar said the loss to crops was estimated at Rs 8633 crore, while the road network suffered a loss of around Rs 222 crore. In Greater Hyderabad, the loss to the properties and roads is estimated to be around Rs 567 crore, he said.

He said the state government had released Rs 550 crore for immediate flood relief measures. The damage was more in Hyderabad and the surrounding districts.

There were major breaches to three major tanks coupled with flooding in Musi river, resulting inundation of all the low-lying areas, he said.

The team visited several flood-affected areas in Hyderabad to assess the magnitude of the damage. They inspected the relief and restoration works at Chandrayagutta and assessed the damages to properties, household articles and vehicles and also severely damaged roads and drains.
