KCR govt wants to demolish Osmania Hospital

Telangana government led by CM KCR on Monday told the state high court that it is planning to demolish the existing old building of Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad.

In a counter affidavit filed in the high court, the Telangana government said the present building of OGH had become dilapidated and was posing threat to the lives of patients.

“So, we want to demolish the structure and construct a multi-storeyed hospital with modern technology and state-of-the-art equipment,” the counsel for the state government said.

The government submitted all the details of the new building including design and architecture. The court, however, asked the government to submit the site plan of the present hospital building.

Counsels for petitioners Satyam Reddy and Rachana Reddy argued in the court that the OGH building was a heritage structure and could not be demolished. They said it could be repaired and maintained as a monument.

“There is another 16 acres of land adjacent to this heritage building. The government can construct the new building in this place, without demolishing the old structure,” the petitioners argued.

They also pointed out the judgement of the high court in the past about maintenance of Errum Manzil building as a heritage structure.

The KCR government wanted to demolish this building as well to construct the assembly complex, but the court stalled the attempt.
