50% quota for weaker sections even in varsities!

The Andhra Pradesh government has followed the policy of providing 50 per cent reservations for weaker sections even in the appointments made to various executive councils of the universities in the state.

This was disclosed by Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy, advisor (public affairs) to chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday.

He said the chief minister had proved his commitment to social justice by providing 50 per cent reservations to weaker sections in the university appointments.

This is the first time that Executive Councils were constituted through a selection process unlike in the previous TDP government which had adopted nomination method.

“Perhaps, this is the first time in the country that reservations were observed in the formation of Executive Councils,” Reddy said.

In all the 14 universities of the State, 50 % reservations were provided to SCs, STs, BCs, Minorities and Chief Minister was particular that women should get half of the posts.

Of the 116 persons who made it to the Council, 58 are women. There were 360 applications which were shortlisted.

He alleged that the pro-Chandrababu Naidu media had been trying to rake up the issue by accusing the government of nepotism in the appointments.

These media houses were silent when TDP government appointments to the Council were on nominated basis in 11 Universities, he said.
