Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has dismissed reports that it plans to fire 30,000 employees, following protests staged by the Union of IT & ITES Employees (UNITE) across multiple cities on Tuesday.
Protestors accused TCS of masking the scale of its layoffs, warning that the actual number could be much higher. They demanded the company withdraw its decision and called on the government to intervene.
In a statement to Financial Express, however, TCS rejected the figure and clarified that job cuts are limited to around 2% of its global workforce — approximately 12,000 employees.
UNITE countered on social media, writing: “Union of IT and ITES Employees protested today in Chennai against the announced TCS layoff of 12,000 employees and the government inaction.”
The union further alleged, via The New Indian Express, that as many as 30,000–40,000 employees could eventually lose their jobs.
The report also claimed that TCS is hiring freshers at 80–85% lower salaries to replace experienced staff.
Among the union’s demands is a call for the IT giant to invest in upskilling existing employees rather than discarding them.
