Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries has filed a trademark application for exclusive rights over the term ‘Operation Sindoor’ — the name of India’s recent military offensive against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Filed on 7 May with the Trade Marks Registry, the application seeks protection under Class 41, which includes education, training, and entertainment services. This points to possible plans for media use, such as a documentary, web series, or film project inspired by the operation.
Reliance isn’t the only contender eyeing the term. Three others — Mukesh Chetram Agrawal, Group Captain Kamal Singh Oberh (Retd), and Alok Kothari — have also applied to trademark the phrase, indicating rising commercial or commemorative interest in branding Operation Sindoor.
The operation, conducted in response to the 22 April terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people (25 Indians and one Nepali), targeted nine terrorist infrastructure sites across Pakistan and PoK.
The Indian Defence Ministry confirmed the strikes early on 7 May, describing them as “focused, measured, and non-escalatory,” adding that no Pakistani military installations were targeted.
With multiple trademark claims already in motion, the race to secure naming rights over Operation Sindoor reflects the growing intersection of national events and commercial branding.
