Australia now top choice for Indian students

Australia has overtaken the United States to become the most preferred study destination for Indian students, while Canada’s popularity continues to decline, according to a March 2025 survey by international education provider IDP Education.

Australia emerged as the first choice for 28% of Indian students surveyed, followed by the US (22%) and the UK (21%). Canada fell to just 13%, down six percentage points from March 2024.

The Emerging Futures Seven – Voice of the International Student report, based on over 6,000 global responses (including nearly 1,400 from India), credits Australia’s surge to its strong performance in global rankings—15 of its universities are in the top 200 of the QS World University Rankings 2025. Additionally, the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) has boosted interest by extending post-study work rights.

The United States remains a solid option with a 22% first-choice preference. Students continue to value its educational standards, job prospects, and post-study work visa policies.

Rising Costs and Visa Hurdles Impact Choices

While Australia and the US remain top contenders, affordability concerns are shaping decision-making for Indian students.

Two-thirds (66%) of respondents identified cost as their biggest concern, followed by visa challenges (47%).

Report noted that financial factors like tuition fees and savings requirements are becoming increasingly influential, with over half of Indian students saying their study destination would change based on scholarship availability (55%) and part-time work options (54%).

Other key challenges highlighted include housing expenses (43%) and managing studies alongside part-time jobs (39%).

Career development remains the primary motivation for Indian students choosing to study abroad. According to the survey, 77% pursue international education to enhance employability and income potential.
