Now, MLC polls under local bodies' quota in Telugu states

Even as the nomination process for six MLC seats in Telangana and three in Andhra Pradesh under MLAs’ quota in Telangana began on Tuesday, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the conduct of 12 more MLC seats in Telangana and 11 MLC seats in Andhra Pradesh under local bodies’ quota.

In Telangana, there are two vacancies each for the MLC elections under local bodies’ quota in Karimnagar, Mahabubnagar and Ranga Reddy and one vacancy each in Adilabad, Warangal, Nalgonda, Medak, Nizamabad and Khammam. The term of the sitting MLCs will end on January 4.

The outgoing MLCs, whose term will expire soon are: Puranam Satish Kumar from Adilabad, Pochampalli Srinivas Reddy from Warangal, Tera Chinnappa Reddy from Nalgonda, V Bhoopal Reddy from Medak, Kalvakuntla Kavitha from Nizamabad, Balasani Lakshminarayana from Khammam, T Bhanuprasada Rao and Naradasu Lakshman Rao (Karimnagar), Kasireddy Narayan Reddy and K Damodar Reddy (Mahabubnagar), Patnam Mahender Reddy and Sunkari Raju (Ranga Reddy).

In Andhra Pradesh, the elections to the council under the local bodies’ quota will be held for the vacancies arising out of the completion of the term of the following MLCs: Payyavula Kesav (Anantapur), Buddha Venkanna and Y Babu Rajendra Prasad (both from Krishna), Reddy Subrahmanyam (East Godavari), Annam Satish Prabhakar, Ummareddy Venkateshwarlu (Guntur), Dwarapureddy Jagadishwar Rao (Vizianagaram), Buddha Naga Jagadeeshwar Rao and Pappala Chalapathi Rao (Visakhapatnam), Gali Saraswati (Chittoor) and Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy (Prakasam).

Of these MLCs, the term of Payyavula Kesav and Magunta ended on June 4, 2019 itself after they got elected as MLA and MP respectively. Annam Satish Prabhakar later resigned from the MLC seat and the TDP; so, his seat has also been lying vacant since June 4, 2019.

The term of the remaining eight MLCs ended on August 11 itself, but the elections could not be held due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Now, the EC announced the conduct of elections for these vacancies in both the states.

The notification would be issued on November 16 and the last date for nominations is November 23. Scrutiny would be held on November 24 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is November 26.

The polling would be held on December 10 and the counting of votes would take place on December 14. The entire process would come to an end by December 16, the EC statement said.
