MLC polls strain BJP-TDP relations?

MLC polls strain BJP-TDP relations?

With the Election Commission on Monday sounding the bugle for the MLC elections in the state, the already strained relations between the Telugu Desam Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party appear to be turning worse.

Elections are going to be held for as many as 22 MLC seats by March end. The elections will be held for seven seats under MLAs’ quota, of which TDP is sure to win 6 seats, leaving one for YSRCP.

It can also get two more seats to be nominated by the Governor. In the remaining seats elections to be held from graduates and teachers constituencies for five seats and from local bodies for eight seats.

And the BJP wants at least three seats as part of the alliance but the TDP is not willing to give more than one seat.

The BJP is demanding one seat from MLAs constituency and one more seat from Governor’s nomination, besides one seat either from graduates or teachers constituencies.

It seems TDP is in principle ready to spare graduates constituency seat from north Andhra or teacher’s constituency from Prakasam, Nellore and Chittoor districts.

The TDP leadership is of the view that the BJP on its own cannot win even a single seat, because of its insignificant presence in the coastal Andhra.

Though TDP state president Kala Venkat Rao tried to convince his BJP counterpart Dr K Hari Babu, the talks are inconclusive. The seat management is now being looked after by Union minister Sujana Chowdary.

May be, the BJP might get one more seat, if senior Central minister M Venkaiah Naidu intervenes, say party sources.
