In what can be called competitive populism, YSR Congress party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy on Tuesday announced a series of sops for the people, saying he would herald a welfare state once he comes to power.
On the second day of his padayatra, Jagan said his government would provide free power to SC, ST houses besides hiking the pension amount up to Rs 3,000 and take up housing on a massive scale to ensure that no one would be left out and would fill up the 1.40 lakh vacancies at the earliest.
While everyone was getting pension during YSR term, now the disbursement has been erratic and I ensure that pension would be given to all old aged people.
If Chandrababu Naidu promises to increase the pension from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000, I will pay even Rs 3,000 per month to the old people.
Jagan also invoked the welfare schemes introduced by TDP founder and former chief minister late N T Rama Rao.
“When NTR said that he would provide Rs 2 kg rice the Congress has promised one kg rice for Rs 1.90 but people did not believe the latter. Since I have promised to increase the pension to Rs 2,000 per month, Naidu may say he will increase it to Rs 2,000. But don’t believe him, because he will never fulfil his promise. I will give Rs 3,000 per month if I become the CM,” Jagan said.
Before Chandrababu Naidu came to power there was no need for the weaker sections to pay power bills as they were exempted but after he took over, the bills are coming in four figures.
“We will bring a turnaround and provide free power to SC and ST colonies,” he said amidst cheers.
He also assured that seven hour power would be provided to farmers during day time and said that local issues would be taken up by Party leaders, even if needs legal intervention.
