Does A Party Need Rs 2,000 Cr To Fight Polls?

One does not know in which world power star and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan is. He seems to be still in his illusionary world and does not understand the ground realities of the present day democracy in India.

On Saturday, Pawan Kalyan expressed utter disappointment over the comments being made by some people about the influence of money in elections.

“Some sections in politics told me that it requires Rs 2,000 crore for a party to fight the elections. They say the major political parties in the state at present are ready to spend such a huge amount in the elections and they are asking me whether I can compete with them in spending money. Why? Can’t we win the elections without money?” he asked.

He said he was taking inspiration from Dalit leader Kanshiram, who had brought his Bahujan Samaj Party to power in Uttar Pradesh without spending much money.

“He showed how one could run politics without money power. He is my inspiration,” Pawan said.

Well, such statements clearly show how Pawan is still dreaming about the Utopian world.

He forgot the history – may be Kanshiram did not spend money, but the BSP which came to power allegedly turned out to be one of the most corrupt parties in the country and Mayawati had faced several allegations of corruption.

Secondly, we are not living in the era of Kanshirams or Jayaprakash Narayan. Even for a sarpanch election, one is spending not less than Rs 50 lakh.

Forget about publicity and campaigning, a candidate has to spend huge amounts on “buying” votes. These are the days when voters do not come to the polling booths without taking money. They don’t care the candidates who don’t offer them money. It was clearly proved in the recent Telangana assembly elections.

What is more interesting is that Pawan is also not keen on constituting committees from booth level to the state level. He thinks his charisma itself is enough to win the votes.

“What happened to Praja Rajyam Party which had constituted committees at all levels? Despite a strong leader like Chiranjeevi, the party could not win good number of seats. Leaders who craved for power have turned a strong leader like Chiranjeevi into a weak one,” he explained.

Well, only God can bless Pawan with power!
