Can KCR take risk with Nalgonda by-poll?

The 'leak' given by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi leadership on the plans to make sitting Nalgonda MP Gutta Sukhender Reddy resign from his seat and conduct by-elections to checkmate the opposition parties has triggered a serious debate in the political circles.

Many political analysts feel that it is a calculated risk being taken by TRS president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao in a bid to the supremacy of the party and demoralise the opposition parties before 2019 elections.

Apparently, the TRS chief is hopeful of winning the Nalgonda LS seat so that it would be a morale booster for the party cadre.

However, it is easier said than done. Nalgonda is not a stronghold of the TRS, as the Congress party had won majority of the assembly seats in the district.

In Nalgonda parliamentary constituency, the TRS could win only one out of six assembly segments in 2014. Moreover, the strong anti-incumbency feeling is growing in Nalgonda against the TRS.

That is precisely why the Congress party has thrown a challenge to the TRS to go in for by-polls in Nalgonda LS constituency.

“We challenge KCR to go ahead with his plan and ask Sukhender Reddy to quit to facilitate bypoll in Nalgonda,” Congress leaders V Hanumantha Rao, Mallu Ravi and Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy said.

However, KCR is said to be hopeful of mobilising all his resources to win the Nalgonda seat. If his party can conquer the seat, it will be a big win for the TRS and that will clear the road for the return of the party to power in 2019 as well!
