Behind The Scene: Is This Fair?

A couple of Kejriwal's election promises were slashing the power bill of Delhi residents by 50% for consumption up to 400 units and free supply of 20000 litres of water to every household.

Now that he is CM, Kejriwal is getting ready to implement the same. Of course, to the general public, it is not a question of whether the government can afford it, whether it is feasible. They only vote for the Party that promises them maximum freebies. Precisely the reason why KCR an Chandrababu came up with the ‘loan waiver’ schemes in their respective states.

Had Delhi been a state with surplus power, one could have understood such a promise from Kejriwal. But Delhi itself has to purchase its power from other States and now by slashing the power bills by half would mean a serious drain on the exchequer.

As expected, Kejriwal has requested financial assistance from the Center to fulfill his promises. Similarly, Naidu and KCR are begging the Center for funds.

When finances are in such a precarious position, why do these leaders announce such populist promises of their own accord and then blame the Center for not providing assistance? Is this fair on their part? Why do honest tax-payers have to bear the brunt of these freebies?
