Azhar rejects idea to contest from Hyderabad

Former MP and former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin is absolutely not interested in being a star campaigner for the Telangana Congress party and contesting the next general election from Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency.

Azhar categorically declared that there was no truth in the reports that the party high command was planning to field him from Hyderabad or for that matter in any other parliamentary constituency in Telangana in 2019 elections.

“The reports are absolutely baseless,” he said.

Apparently, the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee came to the conclusion that Azhar was interested in leading the party campaign in Telangana, when he said he was keen on working for Telangana state. In fact, TPCC chief Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy went on to claim that Azhar had agreed to contest the next elections from Telangana.

“He accepted our request,” he said.

The former cricketer, however, rubbished the claim. Yet, seniors like Mohammed Ali Shabbir and V Hanumantha Rao advised Azharuddin to contest from Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency in 2019 elections.

Being a Hyderabadi, Azhar has better understanding and knowledge of problems faced by the people in the city and therefore, he should contest the next elections from Hyderabad, they said.

Azhar was elected to Lok Sabha from Moradabad seat in Uttar Pradesh in 2009 elections on a Congress ticket, but lost in the last elections.
