At last, Telangana assembly to meet on Jan 17

At last, the Telangana assembly is going to meet on January 17 to enable the newly-elected MLAs to take oath and officially become members of the state assembly.

The elections to the Telangana state assembly were held on December 7 and results were declared on December 11, with Telangana Rashtra Samithi headed by K Chandrasekhar Rao returning to power for the second successive term.

The Election Commission issued a gazette notification constituting the second assembly of Telangana on December 12. And KCR was sworn in as the chief minister of the state, along with Mahmud Ali as the cabinet minister.

Normally, the assembly session is convened within a week of the declaration of the results, but Telangana Rashtra Samithi chief refused to give his nod on the ground that it was not an auspicious month.

Now, the Chief Minister’s Office says the assembly will be convened from January 17, because of the auspicious muhurtham: it will be Ekadasi Day of Uttarayana period.

The session will last just four days till January 20. A day before the commencement of the session, Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen MLA from Charminar constituency Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, the senior most among the legislators, will take oath as pro-tem speaker.

Governor E S L Narasimhan will administer the oath to Khan in Raj Bhavan at 5 pm on January 16.

On the first day of the session, the newly elected MLAs will take oath one after another. Later, the schedule for election to the speaker post will be announced and the nomination process will commence.

The election of the speaker will take place on the second day. The newly-elected speaker will conduct the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting after the house is adjourned.

On January 19, the Governor will address the state assembly. The next day, the House will introduce motion of thanks to the Governor’s address and adopt the same, the official release said.
