Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas has set a new example for others by pledging his organs for donation to others on the occasion of 'World Organ Donation Day' on Monday.
The minister gave an undertaking to this effect by inaugurating organ donation and transplantation program organised by CARE hospital in Hyderabad. He said he had decided to donate his organs and would also mention it in his will.
"The awareness about organ donation is very low in the country. Only 0.16 per cent per ten lakh Indians donated their organs in the previous year. More than five lakh people are losing their lives due to shortage of organs," he said and appealed to people, especially the kin of brain dead patients, to come forward for the cause of saving the needy.
"Donating organs amounts to giving a second life to a patient (who needs transplant)," he said.
