Across India, states are celebrating their homegrown athletes who brought glory to the nation by winning the Women’s World Cup.
Many state governments have announced cash rewards and government jobs for their players. But surprisingly, Andhra Pradesh has yet to recognize or reward its very own star; Nallapureddy Shree Charani.
Shree Charani, daughter of Chandrasekhar Reddy, an RTPP employee from YSR Kadapa district, played a key role in India’s historic World Cup victory.
As a left-arm spinner, she delivered an outstanding performance, taking 12 wickets in 9 matches while maintaining an impressive economy rate; a major factor in Team India’s success.
During the final in Mumbai, TDP leader Nara Lokesh and his wife Brahmani were seen cheering for Team India. They later congratulated the women’s team on their historic win, with Lokesh stating that their visit was meant to encourage women in sports.
However, senior YSRCP leader S V Satish Reddy questioned why the coalition government has not yet announced any financial reward or recognition for Shree Charani, when other states have already declared ₹1 crore each for their players.
Observers say this issue shouldn’t be politicized.
Recognizing Shree Charani’s achievement with a government job and a financial incentive would not only honor her contribution but also inspire many young girls across Andhra Pradesh to take up sports.
It’s now up to Minister Nara Lokesh to take a proactive decision and set the right example.
