Raju custodial torture case still haunts ex-CID chief

Senior IPS officer and former Crime Investigation Department chief P V Sunil Kumar continues to face the music from the Telugu Desam Party-led coalition government for the alleged custodial torture of former Narasapuram MP and present Andhra Pradesh assembly deputy speaker K Raghu Ramakrishnam Raju.

On Wednesday, the CID issued formal notices to Sunil Kumar, presently Additional Director General rank officer in suspension, in connection with the alleged custodial torture of Raju.

The CID authorities directed Sunil Kumar to appear before the investigating officer on December 4 for questioning.

As per the notice, Vizianagaram Superintendent of Police Damodar will examine Sunil Kumar, who has been named Accused No. 1 (A1) in the case.

The case follows a complaint filed by Raghu Ramakrishnam Raju on July 11, 2024, with the Nagarapalem Police in Guntur.

In his complaint, Raju alleged that CID officials attempted to “kill him in custody” after arresting him on May 14, 2021, in a sedition case registered against him during the previous YSRCP regime.

He accused senior CID officers of subjecting him to physical assault and mental torture while he was in their custody.

Following a preliminary inquiry, notices have now been issued to Sunil Kumar, marking a significant development in the long-pending case.

The CID is expected to record his explanation and examine his role in the events that transpired during Raju’s detention.
