Naidu govt backtracks on smart meters!

It appears that the Telugu Desam Party-led coalition government, headed by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, has succumbed to public pressure and withdrawn yet another controversial decision that had sparked strong resistance from the people.

The decision pertained to the installation of smart meters for domestic and agricultural consumers.

Almost all sections of society opposed the move, and the Left parties, backed by the YSR Congress Party, threatened to launch a massive agitation.

On Monday, State Energy Minister Gottipati Ravikumar clarified that smart meters would not be installed without public consent and that no such initiative would proceed without the approval of the people.

He stated that smart meters would currently be installed only for industrial and commercial establishments, not for agricultural consumers.

He also criticized the misinformation being spread on social media regarding smart meters and directed officials to educate the public on the matter.

Concerns have been growing across Andhra Pradesh about the installation of electricity smart meters in homes, with many fearing inflated bills or charges even when no power is consumed.

In some areas, electricity department staff attempting to install the meters were stopped by residents. In response, the government has taken a key decision.

Ravikumar instructed officials to raise awareness among the public and use check meters to address doubts before proceeding with smart meter installations in households.

He reiterated that no steps would be taken without public support.
