Kumar Vishwajeet is new intelligence chief of AP!

The Election Commission of India on Wednesday appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Kumar Vishwajeet as the new director general of police (intelligence) of Andhra Pradesh with immediate effect.

Vishwajeet, a 1994-batch IPS officer of Andhra cadre, replaced P S R Anjaneyulu, who was sacked from his post by the Commission on Tuesday night. He has been asked to submit the compliance report to the police headquarters on Thursday.

The EC also appointed a 2006-batch IPS officer P H D Ramakrishna, as the new police commissioner of Vijayawada, in place of Kanti Rana Tata, who was also dropped from the post by the EC on Tuesday night.

Both Rana and Anjaneyulu were relieved on Tuesday itself. The EC asked the Andhra Pradesh government not to entrust to them any responsibility related to the elections.

The transfer of Rana and Anjaneyulu and the appointment of new officials came following a report from chief electoral officer M K Meena, following the intelligence failure in preventing the stone pelting on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on April 13 and the inability of the Vijayawada police commissioner in ensuring adequate security to the chief minister.

The commission felt that the intelligence chief failed to gather requisite intelligence about the impending danger to the VVIP while the CP too failed in providing fool proof security cover.
