Jaya Badiga becomes first Telugu Judge in California

State Governor Gavin Christopher Newsom has appointed Jaya Badiga, an Indian-origin woman, as a Judge in the Sacramento County Superior Court, making her the first judge in California from the Telugu-speaking states.

Judge Badiga was born in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, and completed her initial education in Hyderabad.

She later earned a Juris Doctor degree from Santa Clara University School of Law and an MA in International Relations and International Communications from Boston University.

Judge Badiga cleared the California State Bar exam in 2009.

Subsequently, she served as a Staff Counsel, Attorney Advisor, Managing Attorney, Attorney at the California Department of Health Care Services, and Commissioner at the Sacramento County Superior Court prior to her appointment as judge.

In addition to Badiga, Governor Newsom announced the appointments of 18 superior court judges, including Raj Singh Badhesha, another judge of Indian origin.
