Jagan focussing on conquering TDP bastions

Jagan focussing on conquering TDP bastions

YSR Congress party president and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is said to be concentrating more on conquering the strongholds of Telugu Desam Party, rather than the constituencies that were earlier held by the YSRCP.

The decision of Jagan comes amid renewed efforts to rework the party’s electoral strategy following successive defeats in the segment.

As part of this exercise, Jagan has appointed a new coordinator for the Repalle assembly constituency in Guntur district.

Repalle has consistently remained a TDP bastion, with sitting minister Anagani Satya Prasad securing victories in three consecutive elections—2014, 2019, and 2024. Even when there was a strong wave for the YSRCP in 2019, Anagani retained this seat.

Recognizing the need for a stronger local presence, YSRCP has now appointed Peeta Naga Mohan Krishna as its constituency coordinator.

Mohan Krishna, a native of Peta Varipalem in Repalle mandal and a real estate businessman based in Hyderabad, has been entrusted with revitalizing the party’s prospects in the constituency.

Party leadership is believed to have factored in local social dynamics and political equations before making the appointment. He has already begun touring the constituency to build organizational momentum.

YSRCP has never won the Repalle seat. In 2014, former minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana lost to Satya Prasad. Despite being re-nominated in 2019 during a statewide YSRCP wave, Mopidevi again failed to secure victory.

Post-2019, Jagan elevated Mopidevi to the Legislative Council and inducted him into the Cabinet. However, subsequent political developments in 2020 led to his resignation from both posts, after which he was accommodated in the Rajya Sabha.

Ahead of the 2024 elections, YSRCP replaced Mopidevi with Dr Evuru Ganesh as its candidate. Despite Mopidevi’s support, Ganesh too lost to Satya Prasad, marking the party’s third consecutive defeat in Repalle.

In a significant setback, Mopidevi later resigned from both the YSRCP and his Rajya Sabha membership, joining the TDP. Additionally, Ganesh is said to have remained relatively inactive in the constituency.

With the party facing a leadership vacuum, YSRCP has now pivoted towards Mohan Krishna, tasking him with rebuilding the party structure.

Whether this leadership change can alter the party’s electoral fortunes in Repalle remains to be seen.
