Notwithstanding the criticism from various quarters and intense debate in the mainstream and social media, YSR Congress party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has decided to go ahead with introduction of English medium in all the government schools in a phased manner.

A decision to this effect was taken at the state cabinet meeting held under the aegis of the chief minister at Secretariat on Wednesday.

Briefing the media later, Information and Public Relations Minister Perni Nani said the cabinet had unanimously endorsed the chief minister’s decision to introduce English medium at the primary level in the government school from next academic year.

He said English medium would be introduced in the remaining classes year after year.  However, the cabinet also decided to make Telugu or Urdu as a compulsory subject in the curricula in the schools.

The cabinet also prepared a set of guidelines for ensuring smooth supply of sand to the consumers.

The minister said stringent action would be taken against those hoarding sand which includes fine and penal action while 84 village courts would be set up.

Nani said a fine of Rs 2 lakh and two-year imprisonment would be imposed for hoarding sand. Sand Week would begin from November 14 to improve the availability of sand in the state and to make two lakh tonnes of sand available every day.

It was decided to increase the ex gratia to the families of fishermen who died in harness from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 Lakh. This decision would come into force from November 21 to mark World Fisherman Day as part of YSR Matsyakara Bharosa programme.
