In a first, I-Day celebrations to be held in Amaravati!

In a significant move to reaffirm Amaravati as the developing capital of Andhra Pradesh, Telugu Desam Party president and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has decided to host this year’s Independence Day celebrations on August 15 in Amaravati.

For the first time since the bifurcation of the state in 2014, Independence Day celebrations will be held in the capital region instead of Vijayawada.

Officials view this as an initial administrative step toward reinstating Amaravati as the full-fledged capital. The decision is seen as a symbolic shift in the state's administrative focus.

The main event will be held behind the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat, where the Chief Minister will hoist the national flag and deliver his address — an act widely interpreted as a signal of the capital’s revival.

Until now, all Independence Day events — under both TDP and YSRCP governments — were conducted at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium in Vijayawada. The decision to move the venue has been welcomed across the state.

Since taking office, the coalition government has prioritized Amaravati’s development. Work has resumed on long-pending capital infrastructure, including the Secretariat, Assembly, and High Court buildings.

Officials believe this year’s Independence Day will symbolize not only national freedom but also the rebirth and progress of Amaravati.
