Fracture in Raju leg: Self-inflicted or police torture?

Rebel YSR Congress party MP K Raghurama Krishnam Raju, who was arrested by the Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (CID) police on May 14 on sedition charges, has a fracture in his left leg.

This was revealed in the medical examination made by a three-member panel of doctors of Military Hospital, Secunderabad, where Raju was brought on May 17 for treatment on the directions of the Supreme Court.

On Friday, Justice Vineet Saran, who was hearing the bail petition of Raju, read out the medical report submitted by the panel of doctors of the Secunderabad military hospital, comprising Colonel Sanjeev Sen Gupta, Colonel S V S Krishna and Lt Col V M Phillip.

The report said Raju was already suffering from coronary artery disease having undergone bypass surgery, chronic HBV infection, non-obstructive renal calculi disease and primary hypertension. He had recovered from Covid-19 and had undergone two doses of vaccine.

However, all the other parameters are normal. But he was slightly limping and walking with support. His both feet were swollen due to edema, bruises on both the limbs on account of damage of blood vessels due to injury.

“The X-Ray of the limbs revealed that there is an undisplaced fracture of the distance phalanx of the second toe,” the report said.

Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi, who argued for Raju said the report clearly proved his allegation that the MP was tortured and assaulted by the cops.

“This is what they do to an MP,” he said, adding that this is a fit case for a probe by the CBI.

The judge said the court was not bothered whether Raju was an MP or not, because is the same for everyone.

Senior advocate Dushyant Dave arguing for the state government suspected that the injuries on Raju’s leg might have been self-inflicted.

“It is at their instance that medical board was constituted,” he said.

The judge wondered whether the government was of the view that Raju made injuries to himself after the medical report and till the person was taken to army hospital. Dave said he was not aware of it.

The court posted the case to the evening to decide on Raju’s bail petition.
