Driver murder: Noose tightening around YSRC MLC

Even as YSR Congress party MLC Ananta Udaya Bhaskar alias Ananta Babu is moving heaven and earth to wriggle out of the case of his farmer driver V Subrahmanyam’s murder in the early hours of Friday, the Kakinada police is under tremendous pressure from the state government to arrest him.

Sources in the party said chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had a telephonic talk with Director General of Police K V Rajendranath Reddy and Kakinada superintendent of police M Ravindranath Reddy and took a serious class for delaying the arrest of the MLC.

He reportedly asked them why a case was not filed against the MLC, despite knowing that the driver was murdered.

Since the issue took a serious turn and Dalit organisations were making a hue and cry over the murder, Jagan felt that it would bring a bad name to the party and the government.

He told the police not to spare the MLA and the police were free to take any action.

“It is a different matter whether the case against Ananta Babu would be proved or not, but first arrest him and send him to jail,” Jagan told the top cops from London.

However, the police are yet to arrest the MLC, who had allegedly been hiding in the house of a party MLA for two days, before moving to some other place.

On his behalf, a couple of MLAs reportedly met the SP and sought his help to save Ananta Babu. He has also reportedly hired a senior lawyer to bail him out of the case.

Latest reports indicate that the police had already taken Ananta Babu into custody and kept him in a guest house. He is likely to be shown arrested later in the day and produced before the court for judicial custody.

“Since Jagan is firm on taking action against the MLC, the police may not try to save him. They might produce him before the court by Monday evening or afternoon,” sources said.
