Can Pawan afford to give RS ticket to Kamma?

Can Pawan afford to give RS ticket to Kamma?

With just a month left for the Rajya Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh, speculation has begun in media circles over who will be nominated to the Upper House.

Four Rajya Sabha seats from Andhra Pradesh are set to fall vacant in June, with elections likely to be held by the end of May.

The terms of sitting MPs; Parimal Nathwani, Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose, Alla Ayodhya Rami Reddy, and Sana Satish are coming to an end.

All four seats are expected to be won unopposed by the Telugu Desam Party-led coalition, as the YSR Congress Party does not have sufficient MLAs to secure even a single seat.

According to sources within the coalition, the TDP is likely to retain two seats while allocating one seat each to the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Jana Sena Party.

However, if Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has his way, he may request the BJP to opt out this time, as it has already been allotted two Rajya Sabha seats in the past two years.

What is generating debate in media circles is the report that Jana Sena Party chief and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan may recommend industrialist Lingamaneni Ramesh for the Rajya Sabha seat from his party.

Lingamaneni is a prominent businessman from the Kamma community with no political background.

He is known to have close ties with both Pawan Kalyan and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. In fact, Naidu is currently staying in a bungalow owned by Lingamaneni in Undavalli.

This has raised a key question: Can Pawan Kalyan afford to nominate a leader from the Kamma community without alienating his core Kapu support base?

Reports suggest that the development has caused some unrest among sections of the Kapu community that support him.

From the beginning, Jana Sena’s political identity has been closely linked to Kapu aspirations, while the Kamma community has traditionally aligned with the TDP.

Hence, nominating a Kamma leader to the Rajya Sabha on behalf of Jana Sena may not go down well with Kapu supporters, sources said.

If Pawan Kalyan prioritizes business considerations over community sentiments, he may go ahead with Lingamaneni’s nomination.

However, such a move could lead to criticism that he is adopting “corporate-style politics,” similar to Naidu, and sidelining long-time party workers.

It may also give the opposition YSR Congress Party an opportunity to intensify its allegations that Pawan Kalyan is compromising Kapu interests in favor of the Kamma leadership aligned with Naidu.

Sources added that if Pawan Kalyan instead chooses his brother Naga Babu for the Rajya Sabha seat, it could partially satisfy the Kapu community. Opting for a BC leader, they said, could further enhance his political standing.

On the TDP side, it is almost certain that Sana Satish will be retained for one Rajya Sabha seat, while the second seat may go to Kamma leader Kilaru Rajesh, a close aide of Nara Lokesh.

If the party secures a third seat, the Chief Minister may consider a BC candidate, sources added.
